How to Remove a Retainer From the Rear Axle Shaft

    • 1). Lift up the rear of the truck using the jack and put the axle on a pair of jack stands so that the wheels are off the ground. Unbolt the rear wheels with the tire iron and set them to the side.

    • 2). Crawl underneath the rear of the truck and place the drain pan underneath the center of the rear axle. Unbolt the differential cover on the center of the axle using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

    • 3). Pry off the differential cover from the rear axle using your hands and allow the fluid to spill into the drain pan. Locate the pinion shaft lock bolt on the passenger side of the inside of the differential. Unbolt the bolt using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then pull the pinion shaft out of the differential.

    • 4). Push in the wheel studs toward the center of the axle using your hands. Look inside of the differential housing and locate the c-shaped retainer clips that hold the axle in place. Pull out the clips using the needle-nose pliers.
