- Remove any clutter prior to decorating your bedroom.bedroom image by Ni Chun from Fotolia.com
Take a weekend and a bit of imagination to decorate your bedroom or update existing decor. Clean out the room first by removing all small items and clutter. Set a foundation by replacing worn carpet or simply placing a room-sized area carpet on top of existing flooring. Paint the walls in a fresh new color that welcomes you for a good night's rest.
Showcase Your Bed
- Create a focal point by accenting one wall and your bed.wood bedroom image by Pavel Losevsky from Fotolia.com
Paint the wall behind the bed in a bold color to create an accent wall. Top it off with a dramatic headboard. Purchase a grand headboard or design one of your own using your choice of materials. Dress the bed to be the focal point in the room. Fresh, crisp linens, a platform or bed skirt, dramatic comforter and a blend of large and small pillows provide an inviting and warm place to wake up and wind down.
Create Dramatic Lighting
- Choose unusual light fixtures.lamp image by Alex from Fotolia.com
Provide ambience in the room by updating existing lighting. Remove any dated lamps and replace them with lamps that enhance the decor instead of simply adding light. Replace lamp shades on lamps that you fancy and choose a dramatic floor lamp to place near a chair in a reading nook. Install highlights to showcase artwork and change ceiling lights to can or track lights that can highlight areas over the bed or dresser.
Hide the Television

Search furniture stores, antique shops or secondhand stores for an interesting armoire that can be enlisted to hide the television and electronics from view. Consider painting or using decoupage to make a one-of-a-kind piece. Use additional drawers in the piece to hide items that can collect and make the room look cluttered. CDs, DVDs, magazines and books can all be housed in the armoire and hidden from view when not in use.
